about

In 2005 Chris Whelan Sr. passed away and the old squeeze box went silent. Chris Whelan Jr. decided to get serious about bringing the old button accordion back to life and wanted to reform the band that he and his dad started. The band was called the Shananigans and this album is a compilation of recordings made since the reformation of Shananigans in 2008. The band hopes to sell enough of this mostly live compilation in order to help finance a professional studio album that will include some original songs. We hope you enjoy our music and thank you for your continued support!

Track Name: Molly Malone
Molly Malone

Trad. Arr. by Aimee Jesso, Tawnya Moore and Shananigans (c) 2013

In Dublin's fair city, where the girls are so pretty
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone
As she wheeled her wheelbarrow through streets broad and narrow
Crying cockles and mussels alive a-live O!

A-live a-live O! A-live a-live O!
Crying cockles and mussels alive a-live O!

She was a fishmonger and sure it was no wonder
For so were her father and mother before
And they both wheeled their barrows through streets broad and narrow
Crying cockles and mussels alive a-live O!

A-live a-live O! A-live a-live O!
Crying cockles and mussels alive a-live O!

She died of a fever and no one could save her
And that was the end of sweet Molly Malone
Now her ghost wheels her barrow through streets broad and narrow
Crying cockles and mussels alive a-live O!

A-live a-live O! A-live a-live O!
Crying cockles and mussels alive a-live O!
A-live a-live O! A-live a-live O!
Crying cockles and mussels alive a-live O!
Track Name: Lukey's Boat
"Lukey's Boat"

Trad. Arr. by Dan Tapper and Shananigans (c) 2013

Well oh, Lukey's boat is painted green,
Ha, me boys!
Lukey's boat is painted green,
The prettiest boat that you've ever seen,
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!

Well oh, Lukey's boat's got a fine fore cuddy,
Ha, me boys!
Lukey's boat's got a fine fore cuddy,
And every seam is chinked with putty,
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!

Well I says "Lukey the blinds are down"
Ha, me boys!
I says "Lukey the blinds are down"
"Me wife is dead and she's underground"
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day

Well I says Lukey "I don't care"
Ha, me boys!
I says Lukey "I don't care"
"I'll get me another in the spring of the year"
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!

Oh, Lukey's rolling out his grub,
Ha, me boys!
Lukey's rolling out his grub,
One split pea, and a ten pound tub,
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!

Well, Lukey's boat's got high-topped sails,
Ha, me boys!
Lukey's boat's got high-topped sails
The sheet was planted with copper nails,
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!

Lukey's boat is painted green,
Ha, me boys!
Lukey's boat is painted green,
It's the prettiest boat that you've ever seen,
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
A-ha, me boys a-riddle-i-day!
Track Name: I's The B'y
"I's The B'y"

Trad. Arr. by Robbie McMaster and the Shananigans (c) 2009

I's The B'y that builds the boat and
I's The B'y that sails her and
I's The B'y that catches the fish and
Brings 'em home to Liza

[Chorus:]

Hip-yer-partner Sally Thibault
Hip-yer-partner Sally Brown
Fogo, Twillingate, Morton's Harbour,
All around the circle

Salts and rinds to cover your flake,
Cake and tea for supper
Cod fish in the spring of the year,
Fried in maggoty butter

[Chorus]

I don't want your maggoty fish
They're no good for winter
Well I can buy as good as that,
Way down in Bonavista!

[Chorus]

I took Liza to a dance,
As fast as she can travel,
And every step that she could take,
Was up to her knees in gravel

[Chorus]

Susan White she's outta sight,
Her petticoat wants a border,
Well old Sam Oliver in the dark,
He kissed her in the corner!

[Chorus]

I's The B'y that builds the boat and
I's The B'y that sails her and
I's The B'y that catches the fish and
Brings 'em home to Liza

[Chorus]
Track Name: Dirty Old Town
Songwriters: MACCOLL, EWAN 1949

I met my love by the gas works wall
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
I kissed my girl by the factory wall
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
Clouds a drifting across the moon
Cats a prowling on their beat
Spring's a girl in the street at night
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
Heard a siren from the docks
Saw a train set the night on fire
Smelled the spring on the smokey wind
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
I'm going to make a good sharp axe
Shining steel tempered in the fire
Will chop you down like an old dead tree
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
